This is an unusual concept… but it has begun to evolve in our business.

Many storage facilities offer the basic, standard options, with set sizes and ways of operating that suit most of the storage needs out there. Whilst we can offer the same solutions, we have not been constrained by a fixed building or a limited size, so out there in storage land, Storex is the recipient of many requests for storage of unusual items. I have had requests to store tombstones, bus windows, even a tram!

We have been able to help most of these customers, but we have had to get creative to do it. At the same time, through our creative enquiries, Storex is beginning to develop a network of people with space to rent. Some of them have a massive space, but only available for a short period, others have small spaces that they just don’t need. Some are under cover, others are hardstand.

In these times, businesses are looking to maximize their income streams, and spare space is a good way to create a bit more income without the hassle.

Not that storage is a hassle, but someone has to screen the clients, enter into a legal storage contract, have a payment mechanism in place and provide access and security for the storer... it can be a bit of work to manage, especially for only a short term arrangement.

We have had success (and a bit of fun) bringing storage clients and space together. This arrangement is really not limited at all, as long as there is an odd corner of space out there and someone needing to use it.

Our role is really to maintain contact with the storage client, to manage the storage agreement and payments and to maintain the security access control for the client, in this way the company with the space just needs to bank the cheques!

As our networks grow, we expect to be able to help more and more people store unusual or short term items, as well as help businesses right across Melbourne utilize their spare space and bring in some extra, hassle free income.

We believe in being upfront about it, and we will always check the stored items to make sure we don’t end up storing dangerous or worthless goods… this gives everyone a bit more comfort around the arrangement! The legal implications are clearly covered in agreement documentation, and serve to protect the integrity of the relationship on many levels.

What is emerging could be described as a kind of facilitator or broker, whatever we call it, it really is all about helping connect and manage synergistic relationships.
